Metrum Technologies’ “Real-Time” IP Over Cellular Communications Selected for High-Profile Demand Response Pilot in California

September 14, 2009

Results of the pilot will be evaluated to understand capabilities and cost benefits for demand response program participation in the California ISO wholesale electricity market

Metrum Technologies, a leading developer of cellular-based Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) and Smart Grid automation technologies for utilities, has announced that its wireless, “IP to the Endpoint” communications technology and dedicated wireless network was selected and utilized for a demand response pilot program by one of the nation’s largest electrical grid operators based in California.

This past summer, the utility began bidding non spinning contingency reserve to the California Independent System Operator (California ISO) on a day-ahead basis using Commercial and Industrial load. Metrum’s system of wireless-device-equipped meters and network services provided the utility with 24/7 real-time data flow in sub-five-second intervals for every endpoint on the system.  The results of the pilot program will be used to help understand the best practices and associated cost-benefit for the IOUs (Investor Owned Utilities) in California on how to participate in the California ISO wholesale market.

“We are breaking down barriers for consumers to bid into our market in a unique way that allows retail customer electrical load to compete alongside conventional power plants to provide ancillary services (operating reserves) that act as standby power,” said California ISO Demand Response Lead, John Goodin. “Just like a generator, these demand response resources are fully integrated into and visible through our automated energy management system and dispatched when needed.”

Metrum Technologies recently introduced the “Metrum Wireless Network,” the nation’s first IP over cellular, data-only network dedicated to AMI and Smart Grid applications. The network will support Metrum’s scalable, IP-based smart meter endpoints and smart grid solutions with reliable, nationwide CDMA network coverage.

“We are very pleased that our technology was chosen by for this cutting-edge demand response program,” said Steve Swenke, CEO of Metrum Technologies. “Metrum’s integrated, IP-based endpoints require no complex infrastructure, are completely scalable, and provide real-time connectivity making it the ideal technology for C&I demand response and Smart Grid applications.”

“All real-time data is routed across a data-only network with ample bandwidth and security to guarantee receipt of time-critical data and information,” added Ovie Whitson, Metrum’s Chief Technology Officer. “Comprehensive coverage, proven endpoint technology and our ability to manage the health of network devices combine to provide our customers with the functionality required for today’s Smart Grid initiatives.”
